Keep your eyes on your fries!

When it comes to the fast food fry, nothing beats what McDonald’s serves up.  It’s like the perfect amount of potato and salt to the perfect crispness.  Then add one of my favorite foods, ketchup.  And you’ve got almost heaven.  So the other day, I went to McDonald’s and ordered a small fry.  It was everything I imagined it to be and more.  When I finished, I turned the bag over and saw some nutrition facts.  The date on the chart is 06/08, but it’s the first time I’ve seen it.  Here’s a blurry pic:


 It’s hard to read, so I’ll give you the pertinent figures:

Calories 230
Fat 11g
Cholesterol 0mg
Sodium 160mg
Sugar 0mg
Protein 3g
Fiber 3g
Vit C 8% DV
Calcium 2% DV
Iron 4% DV

 So, I’m not going to sit here and say McDonald’s offers excellent nutrition.  Obviously, I won’t say a small fry a day keeps the doctor away.  But, quite frankly, after all the crap we’ve heard over and over again about McDonald’s, I’m shocked with these numbers.  For someone who may not have money or convenience, etc to eat well, it’s pretty decent nutrition.  That’s a decent amount of calories and fat, and it will stick with you.  No sugar (since sugar is EVEEL.) And protein, and fiber!  Do you know how hard it is to find fiber in food you eat every day???  And it even has some good vitamins and minerals thrown in.   

Seems to me this is another prime example of how food is demonized to match up to a preconceived ideal.   If you catch yourself thinking, well, everyone should eat organic, free-range, vegetarian, no-preservatives, whole food, just stop.  Because everything isn’t as evil as you think it is.  And not everyone is living their lives with your opportunities and privilege.
